A trip to Pusat Kraftangan Malaysia.

We were so close...of missing the chance to go to the Pusat Kraftangan...I personally did not regret going to this humble yet cultural place...The knowledge gained from this short trip was far more than I had expected...

We were first urshered to a little garden where artists can just come anytime of the day to express themselves through art and display them in small 'pondok's all over the garden...The peaceful and relaxing area had attracted a few artists and we were there to observe their every move...The artworks displayed in the 'pondok's were mostly full of colours and portrayed surrealism...I was captured by the detailing of the artwork and it made me wonder how long did the artist took to finish it...

We then proceeded to the fabric part of the Pusat Kraftangan. Our guide showed us how to use a 'kek tenunan' and the end product, which is a 'songket'...It refreshed my memory as I had come across it during my SPM year...Later, we were allowed to see different fashion styles made from 'batik' and also 'songket'...

Our visit continued as we visit the muzium where there were displays of antique 'congkak' as well as 'keris' and pottery...The 'labu sayong', which originated from Perak can keep the water stored inside of it cool!!...and the 'keris' which was displayed has so much aesthetical value to it...

By the end of our trip, we were each given a small bag as souveniers...

Did You Knows

Did you know that last Friday, 5th of June was World Environment Day? It was. Sooooo,

HAPPY BELATED WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAYYYYY!

We were at d camping trip last Friday (which was awesome!!), so we couldn't post it then, sorry.

DID YOU KNOW ;
By recycling just 10kgs worth of paper, you can save 15 litres of oil?

Energy saved from 1 recycled aluminum can will operate a TV set for 3 hours, & is d equivalent to half a can of gasoline?

Over 100 pesticide ingredients are suspected to cause birth defects, cancer & gene mutations?

Everyday 50 to 100 species of plants & animals become extinct as their habitat & human influences destroy them.

63 000 square miles of Rainforests are being destroyed each year.

Eco joke :
Why can't you play cards in d jungle?
Because there's too many cheetahs!

10 Simple Ways to Go Green(for beginners)

  1. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
  2. Lighten up: Use energy efficient light bulbs.
  3. One click for man, one giant leap for the planet. Adjust your thermostat up one degree in the summer and down one in the winter to drastically reduce emissions.
  4. Use your off switch. Turn off electronic devices, lights, and appliances when you are not using them.
  5. Get dirty. Plant a tree.
  6. Take your foot off the gas. Carpooling and using public transportation reduces emissions and is cost effective.
  7. Out with the old, in with the new. Replace old appliances with energy efficient ones. There are many to choose from and they’re not too pricey.
  8. Go local. Farmers markets and independent stores are less likely to ship products or use harmful pesticides. You use less gas shopping locally too!
  9. Organic is your friend. Don’t be afraid to try organic products. They taste, feel, and smell the same but they are natural instead of processed. Price differences are minimal but the nutritional benefits are massive.
  10. And this little baggie went to market… Bring your own bags to the market. An average American family acquires 60 plastic bags per week and rarely reuses them. Try ECOBAGS and help us save the planet, one bag at a time.
*Remember: Learn green, Love green, Live green.

Fashion is Going Green with Organic Chic!!

Hi blog buddies!!

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple decades, you know that pollution and global warming are ever-increasing problems in our society. Recently, there has been a major boom in the production and purchase of "organic" products, everything from food, to fabric, even beauty products. Check out these chic and awesome clothing made from organic cotton!

According to Azalea Online, a premier web marketer of Eco-friendly clothing and beauty products,
"High-yield cotton farming, worldwide, uses about $2.6 billion worth of pesticides a year. 35% of that is used in the U.S. It’s harmful to humans and wildlife, contaminating water supplies and killing native species." That is a good reason for us to start adding organic cotton products to our wardrobe...

They design everything from cute animal-inspired tees, to denim, to track jackets, such as this one. And it's all made from organic cotton
.

Loomstate Track Jacket in White, $161, Azalea Online

Another great organic brand is Stewart+Brown. This just goes to show that organic can be stylish as well!
STEWART + BROWN Organic French Terry Tailored Jacket in Graphite, $190.00, Azalea Online
Stewart+Brown also has cute tote bags and capri pants, among other things, on their Azalea Online page.

And did you know that there are organic jeans as well?

Bread Denim The Deviant Twisted Jean in Carbon, $229, Azalea Online

Edun makes fashionable clothes made from organic materials, they're diverse, and if you didn't know any better, you would have no idea that their clothes were organic, which means they blend in seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe.
Edun Gertrude Cardigan in Jute, $215, and Bronte V-Neck in Multicolor Natural, $155, Azalea Online

Even my all time favourite fashion designer, Alexander Mcqueen used a lot of recycling materials for his latest fall 2009 collection......it's beyond couture.........

Jom Jom Go Green!

I came across an article in a magazine about greening your vacation. So here i am sharing with you d content :) D holidays are right around d corner for us FNBE Jan '09 students. We have 2 weeks of break, so probably some of us are going for trips. So hey, why not green your vacation?! Time for some holiday fun, d GREEN way! ;D

ECO DESTINATION

Go local! Travelling hundreds or even thousands of kms uses up more fossil fuels. Instead of going to d US or d Gold Coast, why not head to Pulau Redang or Pulau Penang? The beauty of travelling locally is in discovering treasures right here at out doorstep!

ECO TRANSPORTATION

Whenever possible, opt for a train ride rather than airplane rides - they are the most polluting form of transportation there is, followed by cars & buses. Avoiding trips that require air travel is d best way to avoid having en environmental impact when you travel.

ECO ACCOMMODATION

Yes, they do exist! There are local hotels dedicated to conserving waste & committed to reducing their toll on d planet. They include the Tanjung Sanctuary Hotel and Frangipani Hotel in Langkawi, bagus Place Retreat in Tioman and Golden Sands Resort, Penang.

ECO ACTIVITIES

Avoid any activities that involve the exploitation of animals such as phototaking with iguanas & elephant rides. This is because the animals often get stressed by regular human contact. Some are beaten, starved & even drugged to keep them tame.

ECO SOUVENIRS

It is always better to buy locally made souvenirs, It is hard to tell nowadays since everything is usually made in China, but you can always ask. It isn't always d cheapest, but remember that it costs more to d environment to ship them here & there is they aren't local!

Take nothing but pictures,
leave nothing but footprints,
waste nothing but time.

Creative Fest

Do you know why this exhibition held?
If your answer is:

a. Because Mr. charles and Pn. Hayati said we have to
b. Waffle shop is right next door.
c. We have nothing better to do.

NO!! none of the answer above is correct. well maybe b. is acceptable because waffle shop is just right next door and the smell is so tempting but its not just because of that, the answer is more than that!

The exhibition was held because to create awareness among us to save our environment. Besides that, some of the funds that we earn will be donated to the childrens home through the Islamic Relieve organization to build a library for them.

Every each group were freely given a choice to set up interesting Funds activities such as setting up booths to sale drinks, accesories, henna and etc...

Our group chose to bake Cookies. Yay!!=D

A day before Creative Fest( 25th May 2009):
My group members came over to my house to bake cookies =D.

We started out sorting ,measuring, and getting ready with our ingredients before mixing it.

Next ,we mix the ingredients

After mixing it, we spread the mixture onto a flat tray nicely and put it in an oven and waited for 10 minutes and..............

tadddaaaaaaaa !!!

our cookies was succuessfully baked.

Okay, it may sound so simple to do but it doesn't end there. There are lots and lots more cookies to bake so Izwan and Afiq decided to do the baking while Nureen, Rui and I prepare as many packaging as we can for the cookies.

Finally....

On the Creative Fest day (26th May 2009):

Creative fest was a blast! Many people came to visit the gallery.

Incase you wanna know, we successfully sold all of our cookies =D YAY!

The exhibition was a success as well. All the hard work we and the whole FNBE peeps have poured out through some sleepless night to do the banner, the magic cake box, 50 invitation cards, the publicity, pinyata, man power to set up everything in the gallery and many more had really paid off. The work may be tiring but we have lots of fun doing it together=D.

Yours truly,
-pamela- [NV]

sculpture:Tree of hope ( temperature)

This is our class (FNBE) Tree Of Hope sculpture. Beauty eh? Every each group in our class have created an issue which is related to one theme 'Environment'.We also think about the factors and effect of the issues and thus, we came up with solutions and put it in a sculpture way.

Our group, which is envee group of course ;) has created an issue entitled 'Temperature' and this is how our sculpture look like:

We also explaine(creatively) about our sculpture by writing & drawing it in a mah jong paper( as shown below).

Actually, we were given 5 minutes to finish it, but thanks to Pn. Hayati, she kindly gave us a little more time to finish it. Thank you Pn, Hayati!!! We heart you!..and Mr. charles too=D without both of you, we wouldn't have our opportunities to show our creativeness.

sincerely,

- Pamela - [NV]
